F***ed up PIP culture at Amazon?

We hear/read lots of stories people been thrown into PIP when they tell their managers that they are leaving the team. These stories are just increasing day by day in Amazon (Blind is just one place you can read these stories). Why does a manager at Amazon has to do this? Is employee changing team internally not good for the manager's career? Besides its completely super wrong that managers at Amazon have been given such huge powers. I have several friends who have been victim of this culture at Amazon and sooner or later Amazon is just going to loose its name once the stock tanks down.

unfortunately you’ll have an endless amount of young graduates wanting to make a name for themselves so Amazon will have no problems continuing the churn and burn culture for the foreseeable future

It should not happen, but you just get terrible managers / people who do this. It will be nice to name shame them to make sure they get piped themselves

I bet this happens at any other company, but good thing about amazon is that you can still appeal it and win

Amazon <'_'> OP Jun 6, 2019

@yacht I dont think this happens at any other company. Most of the companies take annual reviews very seriously to outline the performance of the employee, at Amazon forte is just a joke or a year around tp that gives employees reasons not to work for some days. You will come across many stories where managers will just put the employee (smart one or outperforming) in PIP just because he is no more interested for the team. Mangers have been given lot of power here.

What is PIP?

Professional improvement plan. A set of milestones you need to meet to remain employed

Amazon needs to start treating their employees as customers

eBay mankatha Jun 6, 2019

Then customers will end up being treated like their current employees.

The customers will get pipped

So it's PIP stories on Amazon's blind channel huh? I always wonder what would be in other company's channel.

Apple VKjg08 Jun 6, 2019

Apple channel is boring. Amazon channel is super fun. I keep an old phone login to Amazon channel to watch the drama from time to time.

Oracle stupidd Jun 6, 2019

Well, Oracle's channel is not any better. Wish I had an Amazon account. Maybe it'll be good for some toilet reading.😉

Managers in Amazon have to rate somebody to the lower end of the bell curve.

Managers get graded if they lose talent. If someone wants to leave, it makes sense to call them bad and kick them out, so the manager appears to not lose talent. It's a little more complex than this, Amazon is already aware and working to fix it. Most of the managers are vetted, so if you find yourself battling against your manager, you'll lose.

IBM 叫爸爸 Jun 6, 2019

What do you mean by vetted? By who? Their friends?

Amazon <'_'> OP Jun 6, 2019

I hope they fix this. @hot are you a manager at Amazon?

Amazon manager: You get a PIP! And you get a PIP! EVERYONE GETS A PIP!!

Taylor Farms Batistuta Jun 6, 2019

Is PIP really that bad. What is Pip

Apple VKjg08 Jun 6, 2019

Performance Improvement Plan. The manager put someone in such plan. One has to send daily work report, working towards a set goal. When the period is ended (usually couple of months). If one not complete the goal one gets fired with very little severances. The goal is usually hard to achieve

Isn’t it expected? Amazon is hiring interns/grads without any interviews.
