This is the 5th time now that a driver starts the ride at the airport **without picking me up** and drives away, making me cancel the ride. I was in precisely the right place at the right time but they just took off. Was just charged $14. Now have to go through a dispute process, which is a black box and yet another thing to track. Never heard of a single company that actually facilitates outright theft of customers' money like this. It's like ordering coffee on a coffee pickup app but when you get there, the barista says they already drank it. Uber, please build some handshake flow to confirm drivers have actually picked up passengers. Or recruit more ethical drivers.

Why would the driver do it? What is the financial incentive?
If they cancel, they are dinged. Their rating is better preserved if you cancel.
But why not pick up the ride and make money.. they are there... I guess only when they truly didn't find the rider they would do this... So it is an unethical way for them to deal with failed rider spotting... ?

I think the driver picked up wrong person. I don’t see why they would run away without canceling, as it just wastes time & money for them.
Why wouldn't they respond to my numerous chats then?
Driver might not be using Uber for nav and might not have noticed your messages. Like I said there is nothing for driver to gain by doing this.

Yeah, that really sucks, what airport was this at? Unfortunately we seem to get a lot of bogus claims looking for handouts, it's been hard to strike a balance between these and real fraud cases. Tho this one should be more obvious to detect with the cancel after the trip starting

Getting an Uber to pick me up at sfo is fucking impossible. I’ve had every variant of drivers driving around in circles and then canceling, saying they picked me up when they didn’t, etc etc. big problems. please make it better uber folks!

This happened to me with doordash. The driver didn't deliver the food but claimed he did when he just drove by my place. Doordash refused to refund me. I uninstalled doordash and got refunded through credit card company.
