Feel Stuck (marketing)

I've been in NYC for the last 2 years at an agency servicing a large consumer electronics company and feel stuck. I keep getting knocked back by real companies (pay pal, SK, Verizon) because my background is "too agency focused" It doesn't help that the work we do is remarkably useless and doesn't look amazing on my resume. I've tried connecting with recruiters and employees on LinkedIn and in person and rarely (never)get a reply. Applying online is so bad that I've just stopped because I get rejected almost immediately. I've been promoted and have more responsibility, but just can't break out and go in-house. Any tips? Anyone been in the same position? TC: 75 YOE: 4 City: NYC

Use referrals, and change your mindset about your work being useless

When it come to referrals, is this a networking event -> connect on LinkedIn -> wait for an appropriate job to pop up -> ask for a referral? Kind of thing?

Yes, and change your resume to demonstrate how valuable your work has been with numbers and metrics

Digital Strategy. I'm confident across all social channels, but I'm really looking for something where I can put together wider strategies across more than just social and event support

Most people leave the agency world by getting hired by one of their clients. Have you networked with your clients enough to ask them for referrals?

I have two friends in NYC agencies, 6ish YOE and they both make about that in salary (not sure about bonus potential). Agency comps are brutally low because they can be - they start college grads at $35k and work them 80+ hours it's insane.
