I am a DS with 1 YOE at an investment firm in NY. I got this job right after my PhD in physics (cern if you know it). Coming from academia, I thought my TC of 125k/20k is decent until I started Blind. It seems that TC > 200k is common for a DS role with similar background, although YOE is usually longer. Now I feel very bad and amost lost motivation for my job. Am I really getting underpaid that much? Or are TC on blind is higher than reality due to bias in sampling? Please tell me the truth, but I would still appreciate a little pep talk. Thanks,
Don't worry so much yet. You could do better, but I know people getting ripped off for that much with 20 yoe.
Sometimes ignorance is bliss. There will always be someone in a “better” place than you. But their circumstances are also different — responsibilities, manager, team, etc. If you were happy before, why would you then outsource your feelings to something you read on the internet?
With 1yoe??? Go gain skills, kid! 125k base for 1yoe is not bad at all.
It's 1yoe with phd...
What you are hearing from is a subset of people most of which is inflated - don’t feel bad - however if you are good you will obviously grow. So most people in blind != reality
You are just starting your career. Your PhD in physics is not directly applicable to your job like some other phds (AI, machine learning, etc) are. You took a delay in your progression because you got your PhD but you should internalize that and move on - your TC is fine and will only grow from here. For the record my partner and I are the same age and she is in your exact position with a similar TC. My TC is 300+ because I went directly into industry, did well, and got extremely lucky. I bet in 10 years our TC will look very similar because she's super talented and competent, just made the mistake of going for a PhD. Don't sweat it.
Hey, I’ve been there and felt bad. 1/ folks lie about TC here. 2/ you are comparing apples to oranges if you are looking at FAANG vs WallStreet. I’ve been doing this a long time, so trust me when I tell you this: find your passion. I know it’s vague but understand if you want to do Wall Street or FAANG. Once that’s done, for a person like you who did PHD at CERN, things shouldn’t be hard. Also don’t think about TC so much. In the long run things even out. Also read Fooled By Randomness while you are at it.
My first job after a physics undergrad was $40k. Now people don't believe me when I tell them my TC. 125/25 is great for a new grad I don't care what anyone else tells you. For now, just focus on learning as much as you can. In the long run, learning more will pump your TC far more than any amount of negotiating. In the meantime and in the future, know your market value, don't be afraid to aggressively negotiate and change jobs once you stagnate.
TC at the beginning of your career isn't the most important for overall TC - focus on learning and developing and what you want to do, and in this industry your passion will reward you in spades.
I welcome fellow ex ivory tower bro or sis who left the cult. Yes you are underpaid. Academia is based on slave labor and 'passion'. Fuck em. Move on earn $$$.
People always tell the truth about TC on Blind. My TC: $999,999,999,999,999
Is that SDE2 or 3?
You're being low-balled. Leetcode more
