Sorry for the long post.. I am network engineer working on the enterprise side. Started my career in Cisco Tac then operations and then ISP. YOE - 10 Skills - Routing and switching (mostly worked on Cisco) It seems the traditional networking is so want to change my profile but not sure what to sure role to pursue, I am also thinking of sort of a semi technical role - Network engineer - I know R&S and security and wireless very high level but I am no expert Network pre-sales - Technical Project Manager - SRE - not sure how much coding would it require. Do not know any coding Another option is to venture into cloud but not sure if networking on cloud is enough or would I have to learn cloud computing , storage , coding too? When I started my career I knew the path CCNA->CCNP--->>CCDA-->>CCDP(which I didn't do)-->> CCIE (with enough work exposure) and I studied hard for it. But now with cloud, SD-WAN and shrinking traditional network roles I feel so lost. If someone could guide what skills, certifications are required for the above role and what career shift may seem best , it would help a lot! I am in a similar situation as you. I joined Cisco TAC and got a couple of CCIEs there (and some other cisco certs too). I then moved to Cisco Professional Services and stayed there for a couple of years. When I started fresh out of collegue, Networking, Cisco certs and Routing & Switching was in high demand. I easily joined the industry after getting my Cisco CCNA and then joined Cisco after getting my CCNP. Back then, I used to double my income salary Year over year. I was (and I am still) super strong in Routing/Swithing. Things have changed nowadays. I now regret having taken the Cisco/networking path. Network Engineers are not in that hughe demand anymore. That doesn't mean there aren't jobs out there for us. Nowadays, I am not pursuing networking certs (I don't think they worth it the same any more). I am now focusing on getting my coding skills to the next level and learning devops, cloud, sre, linux, etc skills. While I don't thnk I am an old school network engineer anymore, I am still looking for my oportunity to fully pivot to cloud networking, devops, sre roles, etc which I think are nowadays what is in demand. If I knew this would happen when I was a fresh graduated, I would have taken the software engineer path...
