Feeling bad about my salary

Sep 6, 2021 21 Comments

This is contrary to other blind posts, I am not complaining about not earning enough, but rather the opposite. I know that I earn shit by blind standards (TC 220), but I live in Europe and this is quite a lot here.
My friends and family earn like 1/10th of that in my home country (Eastern Europe) and wont ever reach what I am getting. This makes me sad, because I am not working harder then others, and I feel bad when I am with them and even when we dont talk money, I can feel akward for earning so much more.

I am always up for earning more like people here, but when clashed with a reality, I feel ashamed. I know that companies are not paying that much from the good in they heart, but it feels wrong.
Anyone else feeling the same? How do you go over that? How do you feel good about yourself and your success without feeling bad for your friends and family?

Crying about being successful is something only educated, liberal, white people do, because it has been beaten into their heads that one can only succeed by taking advantage of others (not true btw). The world is not fair and never has been.

Jobs don't pay based on how hard you work. They pay based on the value you provide to the company vs how much it would cost to replace you.

If you want to be nice to your friends and family, then plan things where they don't have to pay or just pay for part of something fun together.

But don't ever let anyone make you feel bad for being successful.

Don’t make everything about politics. Ever heard of empathy? That’s what OP has and you don’t.

It's not political. It's a very common thing that a certain group feels, because they have been taught to feel that way. I have plenty of empathy. Being successful doesn't mean you lack empathy, and virtue signaling doesn't mean you have more empathy than others.

I sympathize. This view is common among people that become high earners relative to their upbringing. It just means you care about your family’s well being, want them to have the same security you do, and are humble enough to recognize how fortunate you are.

I feel better about it by knowing that if any kind of financial matter comes up, I can take care of it for my family and ensure they’ll never have to worry again

By the way, as demonstrated by the sentiment of the responses you received, you’re going to have a hard time finding genuine responses here. Blind is a place for empathetically handicapped
