My job title says 'Data Analytics', but my day-to-day work is VBA coding, SQL query writing and Python-based machine-learning-app writing, with the occasional Tableau project thrown in. I'm currently working on a master's degree in analytics, which I'll be done with in a year. Is VBA/SQL/Python/Tableau really much to brag about? I've had recruiters hit me up for jobs that pay 30K more than I'm making now (and I'm tentatively planning on taking them up on their offers once I'm finished with grad school). I though I was doing OK for myself, career-wise, but reading some of these threads on Blind makes me feel like a loser. TC: 90K YOE: 6 Location: Midwest #datascience #data #dataanalytics
Isnโt that what a ds do?
It is your location that your pay is low. I don't see anything wrong with your profile.
Iโd add Apache Spark into the mix if you havenโt had it already.
Good idea. I've done a little bit with Spark in grad school; not much in real life.
Which city in Midwest? 90k is good for Midwest
Minneapolis
My company has a Minneapolis office and you can probably make more. DM if you want to talk. Pretty stable place to be
It's plenty, in fortune 50 companies you get people who get paid a lot more who don't know how to use pivot tables and believe that anything beyond that is the stuff of wizards and engineers.
Really? Are you exaggerating? Honestly curious.
Yup very true
You have great skills. Just hop to something bigger and better to feel better. Know to you already posses some of the top analytical skillset.
Yes your experience is legitimate analytics. Blind is heavy with people doing (or talking about doing) state of the art data engineering and science. The majority of the industry is making reports, making ETL jobs, and building SQL views. Once you finish your degree, get a new job using some new data buzzwords. Youโll get a nice pay bump and realize that most people are just using tools, even if on paper it sounds like they are a research scientist.
The sooner you realize that you should not focus too much on what other think of you, the sooner you'll be happier. Everyone have different interests and skills
I have felt like this years back. Don't worry at all. Just keep on learning and make yourself invaluable. Choose a path (data engg or ml) and deep dive. More than pay, peace is very important. Just keep learning and be happy
