Fiancée is applying to medical residency, where are the best places for SWE?
Her preferred locations are Philadelphia, Iowa City, LA, Ann Arbor, Salt Lake City, and Portland (in order of residency program ranking). What are the best places for SWE? My experience is mostly in ML, but I have some full stack experience as well, and if push comes to shove I’m open to other types of eng roles or even other (similar) jobs entirely (e.g. data science, trading, etc). Some cursory research is pointing me to the following ranking: 1 - LA 2 - Portland 3 - Salt Lake City (but Portland is a lot better) 4/5 - Philadelphia/Ann Arbor 6 - Iowa City (best bet is probably remote I think) I don’t really know any of these places well though so would appreciate any input! Also, to my coworkers who can probably figure out who I am - I’m not actually planning to leave anytime soon. My fiancée just wants to know how she should rank her programs for now; I’ll follow her eventually but not immediately at the start of her residency.

I agree with LA for the top spot because they have the best medical teaching hospitals, I may bump Philly to third or even second because on top of having good hospitals they also have a great healthcare system compared to other states for people who actually live there. But a lot of SWE jobs there are federal and require mid to high clearance. The other good thing about LA though is that there are good places in the greater Los Angeles area as well. I would rank it first because it is a win-win for both of you. Irvine for example has an Amazon office, a Google office, and UCI Health which has several teaching hospitals with high rankings for medical residency AFAIK. In Los Angeles proper you have UCLA Health hospitals (very highly ranked) and main campus. Santa Monica area is where Hulu and Roku are both headquartered.
Yep! In our case LA = UCLA so commuting to Irvine is probably out, but there’s plenty going on in Santa Monica (also has Google/FB/Snap + a bunch of private companies)
Just FYI- Pittsburgh is a 5 hour drive from Philadelphia and it’s having tons of opportunities in ML AI (FAIR, Uber ATG, Argo, Duolingo plus many top tier AI teams in Google/ Apple lead by CMU Professors). Also UPitt has a great medical school

What are the good spots in Ann Arbor/Detroit? I found an Amazon office in Detroit and a Duo office in Ann Arbor but didn’t see other companies that I’d heard of (quite possible I missed a bunch; I just looked at the jobs tab on LinkedIn). I’ll try to come back if she matches there since referral is always easier than cold applying :)
For a start all of the Dan Gilbert companies (anything that has Rocket in the name), like Rocket Mortgage and StockX.
Iowa City will be nice for her and there are opportunities for you at the University, but you're not going to find much else related to ML. Collins has some teams working in that field, but it's not widely adopted within Aerospace yet.
