Traveling is primary reason but I don't believe you can do that the majority of the year every year. What else to do with THAT much free time?

Also what happens when a big medical issue forces you to go back to work but your skills are too outdated to get hired (or at least hired with a six figure salary)?

Do you know anyone who has done this? I see lots of talk but no walk. Most people just keep working even after they reach their goal. A lot of people don't know what to do with their lives. They have defined success as a job role or financial target. Once you are close, you get nervous about what to do and so set new goal as another job role or financial target.

Once Financially Independent and Retired, I would live a simple life and,
    1. Travel places.
    2. Go back to school and study physics and math.
    3. Take job only for curiosity.
    4. Open source.

Another thing not mentioned much is that when you are FI, you might have a very different attitude with your job. Mentally, it's very different to know that you are free to quit at any moment, and more importantly, that you are working because you want to, not because you need to.

Passion projects, because life isn't really fun without some sort of work. Spend more time with my daughter. Foster all the babies, with a focus on disabled or terminally ill children. Build the motorcycle that I've been collecting parts for since I was 18. Start sewing again. Pursue anything that sounds interesting.

  • *If* I manage to successfully stick around long enough to bank an early retirement fund inclusive of a worst case medical scenario:

    1) Serve on the board of a local health and human services nonprofit organization I believe in and spend time helping them do awesome things to make the world a better place for everyone.

    2) Learn how to roast coffee beans and start a small batch roastery for fun including taking sourcing trips to coffee plantations in places like Sumatra and Colombia to buy beans.

    3) Become an expert drone landscape photographer and do epic multi-week backpacking trips into remote locations. Publish a book of the photography.
