Finally hard work pays off after lots of interview

Hi Blinders, After applying to almost a hundred companies (Austin/Bay Area), here are my results from last November till today. I know this is nothing compared to Blinders, but still wanted to share and let every one know that don't give up!! 14 Phone Screen -> 8 Technical Phone Screen -> 4 Onsites -> 2 Offers Onsites ———— Uber (Offer) Indeed (Offer) Some Startup(Offer) Apple (Rejected, got an onsite but was canceled by the team last minute, really bad experience) Two Sigma (Rejected, bombed one round. Their pay is insane though) Amazon (Rejected, I think I was rejected by a junior developer who asked me a super HARD question even though I got through optimally for his first two questions) Technical Phone Interviews ————————————— Apple, Amazon, Uber, Indeed, Two Sigma (Moved on to onsite) Adobe (Rejected I guess? Recruiter did not reply and I didn't care) Google (Rejected, the interviewer was really bad, did not want to talk to me, did not want to answer any clarifying question I asked) Realtor (Rejected, first phone interview, I sucked big time that time) HR Phone Screen ———————— Black Locus (Rejected after talking with HR) LinkedIn(Referred, no one contacted me), Yelp (OA Rejected), Microsoft (OA Rejected) RetailMeNot (Rejected no HC) Facebook (Rejected no HC) OA=online assessment HC=Head count Notes: 2.5 YOE, 95k somewhere in Texas. Did 200ish Leetcode, Grokking the System Design, a lot of Youtube system design conference video. Did fullstack during work. Also what offer would you consider? Indeed SRE Austin (140~150TC) Uber SWE SF (190~200TC) Also, considering my wife is in Texas doing here medical residency here, so she wouldn't be able to relocate with me. So I would either be driving a 1.5hr back home or taking a 5hr flight home ($1600/month) every week.

150K in Austin is great. Much better than 200K in SF. Also, no state tax in TX.

Austin is great. You can always work from home on a shitty day, flying weekly is hot garbage

It’s not about saving money it’s about what work he gets to do at Uber vs SRE at indeed

DigitalOcean TC TC Apr 8, 2019

First of all, congrats! I'd definitely pick Indeed. Residency can be rough, I wouldn't want to miss out being there to emotionally support the wife.

Hortonworks DonQuixote Apr 9, 2019

Agreed, your wife need ur support at this time so try and negotiate remote work opportunity

Flying from SFO -> AUS every week is crazy! Why are people even recommending the Uber offer?

ViaSat ahsuendb OP Apr 8, 2019

Yeah...it is...

Google hooli.xyz Apr 8, 2019

You should definitely pick Indeed. That’s a pretty good offer for Austin.

You'll have a great life in Austin with $150k, especially if your wife is a doctor/nurse as well. I think the traveling might put too much pressure on your marriage.

How long did you spend from beginning to prepare until now?

ViaSat ahsuendb OP Apr 8, 2019

Started November and really started to interview January. So the first few interviews last year was a disaster...

Happy wife happy life

Is Indeed a good brand name? I know Uber is really good but not sure how Indeed compares to it.

Cerner hbmh1$57 Apr 8, 2019

Uber is definitely better brand name than Indeed. Do you just care about TC or would like to keep balance life and support wife. FYI, once she completes Residency she is easily making $280k+ and if rural areas $340k+

Indeed is kind of known as the place FANG engineers go when they have kids for the WLB.

Cerner hbmh1$57 Apr 8, 2019

Congrats. I would go with Indeed, thus support your wife while earning better pay. Curious about 1.5 hr drive, can you please elaborate?

ViaSat ahsuendb OP Apr 8, 2019

Driving back to where my wife is doing her residency.

TI IOlOl0 Apr 8, 2019

1.5hr drive is way easier than getting to airport + 5hr flight time + rent in SF. Is remote work a couple days a week possible for either offer?
