I took an image of this google doc comparing IBD with tech, consulting, and a couple of other jobs. IB tops all. How much would you guys agree with the numbers on this image?
Wow 😳
In finance those numbers are for the BSDs only; ordinary office workers won't reach the first row in the chart even after 20 years' tenure.
What's BSD?
Big... Swinging... (do people not say this phrase anymore?)
Have you considered company stock appreciation in the calculations?
LMAO of the chart
For Finance, it would show a different picture if it's not staying in IB for 10 years. Most people prefer (if they can) to move from IB to the buy side (hedge funds or PE after), and compensation there is also better than IB.
Hedge fund is much more skill dependent, IB pays pretty damn well everything considered. PE is usually considered the promised land though, probably easiest path to 1m+ comp.
Is there a link to know more about this space
Looks pretty correct, maybe +- 25% on a few data points. Gets the cumulative trend approximately right. Medicine has much more variance than this might suggest though.
Medicine #s not accurate
Would love to see this expanded into 30yrs or through the retirement age
Agreed. Would look very different if expanded to ~25 years or so. Doubtful most people would still be in finance/tech/law/consulting after 20-25 years but the vast majority would still be in med. Would be nice to see other paths as well (buyside, corporate functions + corp management, sales roles, academia/r&d etc).
Experienced neurosurgeon can earn at least 1M annually. btw I moved from medicine side.
What is/was/will be your TC at 5,10,15,20,25,30 years?
When I first saw this post I thought it implied the curves would extend such that IB overtook the others by a large margin. But actually this chart is showing the “best upward trajectory by career”. For this Tech wins by a huge margin. Made-MD-in-10-years is equivalent to being a core engineer who crafted Google Maps or Yelp. Making MD at Goldman is equivalent to making L8 at a FAANG, not L6 or L7. The only step past MD is Partner, and partner means “has successfully run a significant business, often from zero-to-one”. Making MD in 10 years is quite rare. (https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/average-age-when-promoted-to-managing-director?amp).
