First 3 days at amazon, manager has no idea what I am supposed to be doing

Sep 25, 2019 488 Comments

Just started at Amazon as an SDE 1 (new grad). NHO was toxic with the first speaker setting up a really weird atmosphere, and like wtf was that bingo game is this a college visit? First actual day manager showed me my desk and had me sit on a couple of meetings. Day 2 just sat around watching whatever videos I had to do in Embark. SDE bootcamp was full so had to push that to later. My whole team is not native english speakers, so I have to ask them to repeat things or just nod my head like I understand

Should I be worried? What the heck should I do tomorrow day 4 (ermm I mean day 1)? there is only so many videos on Broadcast that I can watch.

TC: 144.5k 108k/28 bonus / 5 relo / 3.5 stock

What was your New hire offer AMZNBucks? Mine was hired without a master's as well but that's also helped by the stocks hypergrowth when I started.

Its just been 3 days, if u get too much work in 3 days, I would worry.
      Have weekly 1:1 with manager
And you need to change your attitude regarding other team members if u want to succeed in corporate world

Here’s the attitude I adopt: because I’m a native speaker of English, I can understand heavily-accented non-native speakers well enough to interact and seek clarification.

That gives me an advantage as an intermediary for diverse teams where people came from different language backgrounds. If you think it’s difficult to understand a heavy accent, I assure you it’s far more difficult for a non-native speaker to understand the range of accents a typical team has. And remote working by video makes it even harder.

      You’ll do fine.

You're a recent college grad who is making six figures straight out of college. I have 5 years experience in IT with a masters in cyber and still not at six figures yet. Work my ass off as a data engineer and underpaid. Talk about entitled bro. I applied at Amazon and didn't get in. And I've been applying several times ever since with no luck. Consider yourself very lucky and take initiative. Otherwise it won't last for you. Any other blinders here from @Amazon I could really use a reference. Masters in Cyber security, US citizen with TS clearance. I can take this guy's job since he's ungrateful.

I think one has to understand that he was expecting a challenge at Amazon. Being bored on your job is worse than being overworked or underpaid, in my opinion. People at amazon work hard and when recent grads like me join big corporations like those, we really appreciate to hit the ground running.

Be biased for action, setup a 1:1 with your manager and ask for a launch plan. Also, there is no need to have such ego and be mean and judgemental. Develop some EQ, it's much necessary.

There are people at Amazon today who had an experience like you. Maybe their manager or skips have since left or been fired, but some of those new hires figured it out and have $3M in the bank ten years later. Find your value.

    Set up dev desktop
    Figure out your team’s pipelines
    Check out all the workspaces
Read the team on board wiki
Get projects running and set up dev env
Look at the SIMs (oe and backlog)
Figure out a SIM to take up and fix
    Set up pager
    Read on call docs
    Look over outstanding TTs
    ...
    Come back when you’re done

This ain’t college anymore, no one is gonna hold your hand in the real world and tell you exactly what to do.

wtf Amazon is the crappiest of all companies for this very reason trying to justify bullshit by talking leadership principles. Proper on boarding activities like sharing background about the business aspects, general direction, vision for the coming quarters etc are needed for any new member irrespective of their level. You think these are hand holding then you may be indirectly contributing to the terrible culture. I would let go people like you and just not hire at all in the first place.
      Sep 26, 2019
    • Amazon luckless
No one “told” me, just personal experience. Even doing my thesis was more hand holding than industry experience since then.

All about self motivation and finding how to help. Ask as many questions as you need to figure that out, no one is going to ding you for asking questions.

You are in tech and complaining that your team is not a native english speakers?? Go work in domestic beef farming and not some international industry. You do know many people who do not speak English natively have many things to teach you, like how to be less racist.

@Apple- Definition of racism - 'the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race' In this case language is the characteristic.

You sampling something based on your 'tiny' experience is the exact definition of racism. I have had excellent colleagues who are from China. Not everyone gets hired because of nepotism. Learn to appreciate the true talent. The OP here is complaining just after 3 days and u r supporting him?

Well, first of all, I'm not a native speaker.
Second if I had to work in any other countries mentioned in the comments, I would've measure my chances of learning that language and then move to the country.
Third the official language is English (US English) please learn it.
I'm still learning, so the other non speakers should do too.
About the person who posted, he's a new grad with probably no experience, that explains everything.

      Apple is full of shit.
If his entire team was incompetent, they would have been sacked long ago.
They fact they they're still working (and hired his sorry ass) just comes to show they're obviously compensation and know what they're doing.
He's just butthurt he's the only one who doesn't speak Chinese.

Disclaimer: I'm not Asian and can't speak Chinese either.

It's not that the whole team isn't native, it's he's the only native. Coming from somewhere without the experience, learning how to filter past the accent is a skill that he has to develop, and it does make it harder for a brand new guy.
This kind of shit attitude is why people turn down jobs at Amazon. The kids just don't know any better.
