I’m graduating this May and have been applying all over the place. I’ve been interviewed at places like Amazon Robotics which didn’t move forward, and NVIDIA which was going great until the hiring freeze. I was really excited to work at one of these big companies to the point where everything else seems underwhelming. The only 2 offers I have now are with a small prosthetics company and a federal position at a naval research center. Taking one of these jobs feels like settling when I could be doing something greater. I guess I don’t have a specific question, I’m just feeling depressed over the whole thing. Any advice?
Stop worrying about the big names for now. Focus on the roles that give you what you need to grow first.
Be glad that someone sees potential in you. I've worked at great no name companies and shitty well known ones. It's all about the work and people you end up working with.
I have a friend who settled for a no name company first, and kept on looking before joining them. Found a tier 2 company couple of weeks before joining. Joined tier 2 company. Spend 1.5 year at Tier 2 company and is now at FANG. I’m sure things will turn out well for you. Just don’t give up.
First job? I have been working for a no-name company for 7 years now. No complaints, I am content.
That sounds like you've enjoyed 7 years of living. More power to you. I think a lot of people underestimate happiness
Yes. I enjoyed it. Good culture, good work, and time for myself kept me here, not the TC. TC is shitty, but I have never stayed at work after 4pm on a Friday, never had to reschedule my doctor's appointment because I was supposed to be at work, never been disappointed when I asked senior management for help at something I wasn't able to do by myself, never had more than 3 working weekends in an year, and never missed a friend's evening party. I am content but I may just be the among the lowest earners on blind haha
Just work hard for a year or two and take another shot at big names if you want. You will have an easier time getting interviews with some experience as well.
I turned down google to join a no name startup that didn’t even have a product. It sucked so I left for google. Biggest regret is wasting my time there when I could have been promoted here
You’ll definitely get a lot less recruiter spam for sure, compared to a new grad at FAANG...
There's nothing wrong with working at a non-faang or lesser known company. In fact, you have more opportunity to make impact and stand out at these companies. Work hard, learn as much as possible, and don't go in with a chip on your shoulder.
