I was informed Monday that the company I work for is going to layoff half my team later on in the week. This is the first time in my career that I’ve been informed I was going to orchestrate the discussion with those getting laid off on my team. I know this topic is sensitive, mainly for those getting laid off, but does anyone have any tips on how to handle this kind of situation? I feel fairly close to the individuals being laid off and am sure I am going to get emotional.
As an IC, 🍿
Didn't get the joke. Anyone explain?
It's not a joke, it means he's just wtlatching
- Stay calm but considerate and respectful. - It’s ok to show a little emotion, it shows that you care. But, don’t overdo it. It’s poor form to be highly emotional when you get to keep your job and they don’t. Let them be emotional. - Don’t make any promises you can’t keep. If it’s final, say it’s final. - Say that you personally value their contribution, and offer to give good reference. - Be ready with some HR-related answers, like severance, insurance, 401k, etc. If not, have a designated contact person from HR to answer them. - Keep it direct and short.
This is spot-on IMO. Only thing I'd add is offer to follow up later in a personal capacity, e.g. provide some mentoring on the job search, show interest in where they land, etc.
Be prepared that if it is more than two employees being laid off, the news will spread before you have time to deliver it to the rest. Also prepare a discussion/1:1 for employees who are not being laid off, especially if they are critical to keeping the lights on. People tend to jump ship in these scenarios. Don't make statements like "if this were my decision..." Have an email ready to be sent to the non-fired people after the bad news has been delivered.
Have answers ready relating to applying for unemployment; severance, if any; job finding or any other services the company is providing; COBRA; etc.
What does TC have to do with it??
He meant to say.. TC or GTFO
Remember that their reactions will be all over the map, so don't be surprised or offended (even if they blame you). However they feel is acceptable, tell them you understand them feeling that way, and don't debate that their emotions are wrong.
Once you are done laying them off, your manager will have a 1:1 with you and lay you off. Get ready to pack your shit and leetcode.
Do not say “it’s hard for me too”.
