Flexport / Airbnb / Amazon

I want to get into an engineering manager role. I have software engineer offers from all these and can’t decide which is the best one to pick to get into a manager role. How do I go about deciding? What has your experience been at these companies? TC: 350K for all three

Why not try to become manager at Uber?

Uber wecvdss3 OP Dec 26, 2019

The team is not setup in a way I can transition to a manager role. So either wait or try elsewhere

If you want to learn alot, amazon

Amazon crack_pip Dec 28, 2019

Learn a lot about unecessary churn through PIP, then yeah, sure.

VMware burned Dec 28, 2019

But that is part of the manager role isn't it? I would never hire a manager that has not done pip or fired for a cause

Airbnb

350k at Airbnb is likely L4. If you join as L4 IC, you need to first get to L5 to be converted to same level manager role M0. That will probably take two years given the current company size. Maybe you can achieve it sooner in smaller companies.

Uber wecvdss3 OP Dec 26, 2019

I’ve an L5 offer from Airbnb, and the TC is much higher, but given how much people clamor for TC here I just wanted to put a number

Airbnb lzhxy Dec 26, 2019

For L5 you can start transitioning to M0. But M0 is not a terminating level. You will have pressure to promote to M1 in certain time frame.

Yoe?

7 yrs

Why Airbnb over Flexport? One is growing faster than the other. And Amazon is always adding new divisions / products

Airbnb not🌭 Dec 28, 2019

Same choice here a few months back. Flexport probably low balled like crazy. And profitability is always an issue. Also SoftBank does have the track record of overvaluing

LinkedIn sacfan Jan 17, 2021

@not why is profitability an issue at Flexport? Are there some structural issues in their business?

DXC Technology bbline2 Dec 27, 2019

Hi op, mind sharing flexport offer details? SDE3?

Amazon foo_ Dec 28, 2019

It's next to impossible to change roles at Amazon

Amazon Baaam Dec 28, 2019

I'm switching right now. My mentor switched. Another person I know is also going into management. I'd say it's fairly easy to switch at Amazon. Maybe you're on the wrong team?

Amazon crack_pip Dec 28, 2019

Yeah, my current manager made the switch and even got promoted after
