2021 TC 140k base + 100k bonus NYC
2022 TC 180k base + ??? bonus NYC
1 YoE + STEM non-CS PhD

Willing to take a pay cut / no pay raise to get the hell out of GS and to get back home to LA. These offers are after negotiation.

Both offers for LA

Google
160k base (150k original offer)
15% annual bonus
296k GSUs (317k original offer)
75k signing (0 original offer)
357k Y1 / 282k Y2 / 249k Y3 / 220k Y4

Meta
160k base
15% annual bonus
350k RSUs (330k original offer)
75k signing
347k Y1 / 272k Y2-Y4

I showed the Meta offer to Google and they refused to match. BS lowballing and front-loading. Google is hybrid but Meta is permanently remote. Google would have about 10 hr / 150 miles of commuting per week, based on where I want to live in relation to the office. Would need to pay $5-6 for gas and would have to keep our second car instead of selling it.

Goals are TC, setting up a permanently remote career, learning how to be a “real” SWE, and getting to Senior (either internal or external) in 2-3 years. WLB is nice, but IMO more hours while WFH can have the same WLB as fewer hours in office, and at this stage in my life I’m willing to work hard.

  • I’m surprised to see such high offers for those levels. Did you absolutely crush the interviews? I have interviews coming up with both those companies and they’re already trying to lowball me.

What’s the best way to prepare and really understand all the FB questions?

    • Leetcode premium is a must. Suck it up and pay.

Do the top 100 tagged FB questions. Read the solutions, even if you find the problem really easy. The solutions may have a different way of doing it. Go back and implement that way. Learn **all** the ways to solve a problem, not just one.

If you’re doing a problem and get blocked then peek at the solution just enough to get unblocked. Go back and implement a solution, and come back to redo the problem tomorrow.

Get really good at those 100 tagged problems. The week before your interview go over them all again. Most will be pretty easy because you’ll remember. Some won’t, study those.

  • What is going on with those gsus? It looks like you negotiated less stocks?

    • No I asked to go from 150/317/0 to 175/440/75, and they responded with 160/296/75. I was also very confused that they cut GSUs. My guess was they pulled from that pot of comp to fund the signing bonus.

Great TC, and take Meta.... you will learn more and grow faster there.

Google is a geriatric Boomer company at this point. It is a retirement home for people that have checked out from life. It will always be there just like MSFT and IBM.

Meta arse is on fire, which means more opportunity to do new things. Google is a monopoly at this point, and it will be like working for the Government. It just wastes millions in projects that eventually kills them kills, just like our DoD/Goverment.
