I’ve been there. Judged myself for being too lazy to cook, or not knowing how to, or doubting my ability to consistently eat healthy so I didn’t try at all. It’s not a good feeling. Besides being super unhealthy, I was spending a lot of my money on these bad eating habits. And the insecurity from not eating healthy also made me stop going to the gym. I’ve turned a corner though, stopped feeling bad about myself, and made changes through weekly planning. And it’s not hard, just start one day at a time. This is a post from someone who’s dealt with it all, found a bit of light, and wants to share it back.

Early pandemic monthly food costs: $800-1200+
Uber eats and postmates - $400+
Starbucks or similar - $100+
Restaurants with friends - $300+
(At least guys. These are at least numbers. Scares me to even think about how much I must have spent realistically)

Current monthly w/ Whole Foods: <$300
Weekly groceries: $40-60 x 4 = $240 max
Restaurants: $60 no more than 2x/month

You might say “yeah, but I don’t cook well, and the food tastes bad and friends are always inviting me out and …” bullshit. I meal prep once a week for 30 - 45 MINUTES. And it tastes great. And I don’t starve myself and I don’t diet and I don’t anything out of the ordinary. I just plan out my week for a little bit ahead of time.

Groceries:
Sweet potato cubes - 6 servings - 10 minutes prep stovetop - $5
Green beans - 6 servings - 10 minutes prep stovetop - $5
Mixed vegetables - 6 servings - 10 minutes prep stovetop - $5
Rotisserie Chicken - 8 servings - prepped, just microwave - $10
Eggs - 12 eggs - 5 minutes cook - $2-3
Avocado - 2-3 - cut and eat - $3-6
Cheese cubes or sticks - box - $5
Blueberries - box - $4
Milk - 1/2 or 1 gallon - $2-3
Petes Coffee pods - 10 - $3-5
Granola (splurge) - 6 servings - $5

Weekly = $50-$60
Monthly = $240

Having food in the fridge means I am not worried about what to do for lunchtime which means I can go to the gym for lunch quick 30-45 minute session then quick healthy meal after. Limit restaurants with friends to once every two weeks, prefer to hang out doing other things if possible.

Save $800-1000 per month.Splurge sparingly. Feel better about yourself. You can do it

    I mean people here will happily grind leetcode day and night but are too lazy for learning how to cook basic meals... First world problems 🤣

    • With high tc comes high responsibility. It is not just about getting into top company. We have to work and take stress every day. Some people are okay with less tc.

      @Yelp you probably sacrifice your well-being and life for much less. Ever play video games instead of going to exercise? You’re always sacrificing somethjng for something else. Might as well make that sacrifice to double your TC. And it’s only for a few months.

      Try it before you knock it.

    Haha, now I feel guilty. I cook about 50 meals for myself a month, and I probably spend about 2-3k per month on food.

      Wholes fucking foods.

      Stop going to high prices groceries and they will cut back prices.

      It's insane not to walk away when you see those places charges you 2.5 for an apple.

      Stop going to whole foods

      @mcaConnect: I really enjoyed madcap, singlethread, ju-ni.

      I didn’t particularly enjoy rasa, and acquerello.

      @lyft: my 3k number (and that’s the high end, I said 2-3k) includes eating out at restaurants. My own food related grocery bills probably run to about 1k
