Fred Wilson (VC): Apple and Google App Store monopolies must end

https://avc.com/2020/09/mobile-app-stores-and-crypto/ “I am strongly opposed to the monopolies that Apple and Google have over mobile apps that run on iOS and Android. I am rooting for Epic/Fortnite in their battle with Apple over the 30% tax that Apple charges developers for distribution in their app store. But more than the tax, what bothers me about these monopolies is the innovation tax they impose on the broad tech sector with their terms of service/rules.”

Epic charges the same 30% on its own store. How is that not a monopoly?

I am supporting Apple.

Wish I could buy from Home Depot through the Home Depot app

VC raising voice because his company cannot raise a huge up round when they’re throwing margin to Apple I’m sure Fred Wilson has more money in $AAPL compared to Coinbase. Classic silicon valley stance

Maybe Fred Wilson actually cares about innovation. He has a strong reputation to stand on.

Brillio JPOW10T Sep 18, 2020

He raised bubble fears in 2016. Insiders say that he wanted to pull down valuations for personal gain. $$$ > Innovation.

If you don't like it, then develop your own app store. With that said, this looks similar to the Internet Explorer lawsuit that Microsoft faced years ago. They got the hammer for preinstalling IE on devices.

Apple tmptng2no Sep 18, 2020

MSFT had 95% market share though.

There’s more similarities between MSFT and the google play store than with Apple. Google, like MSFT only provided the operating system preloaded on devices from another company. Apple also provides the device. I won’t say whether it’s still monopolistic if they provide the device too but the precedence that it would set would be much greater than just providing an OS.
