I have a friend who just went through an interview process for a contract-to-hire position as a data analyst from Google. He's got a bunch of SQL, Tableau, dashboarding experience, but curious if there are any issues people here know or have seen with these kind of positions. He's been offered around 90k for a contract position in San Jose.
It boils down to his alternatives. Is 90k a good offer for him? Or is he taking a pay cut for the allure of Google (and the hope of conversation to FTE)
So you would rely on strangers recommendation without sharing the context? If your friend is homeless, this is an amazing option, if he has another offer >500k, this is a shit offer.
He doesn't have any better offers. Don't know what he makes now but probably in the neighborhood of 50k on the east coast.
50k in most cities on east coast is better than 90k in San Jose
There is no more contract to hire. It's the recruiter telling your friend there is a possibility to get a full time position. While true, your friend will compete with external candidates as well.
Here’s the other thing too is Google directly saying it’s a contract-to-hire position or is it the contracting agency saying it? Cause it’s possibly going to be the old switcharoo done to you.
12 month contract with an option to extend or possibly go fte. Could have been more clear about that. I don't think it's a switcharoo as much as dangling the possibility out there.
You’re not even supposed to mention the possibility of ever going FTE to a TVC.
I am sick of these people with a vacuum in place of balls, who feel the need to ask “for friend” on the anonymous platform. Does your friend not has thumbs, or you are his pimp?
He doesn't use blind so posted for him.
Once a contractor, contractor forever
90k as a 1099 worker sounds extremely shitty
From what I have seen, close to 1% of TVCs convert to FTE. There is no formal process for your friend to be converted any more. That was changed earlier this year. Working 'at' Google can be a good experience for him to learn about Google's culture and interact with other Googlers, but that is pretty much it. I would rather work at another company and build my skills and not take a pay cut in hopes of converting. You can always apply to open roles and have a better chance than a TVC does.
