Hi, I'm currently working as a Network Engineer. In my role I do alot of automation using various programming languages. When an opportunity is presented I create web applications for various members on my team to try to make tasks they complain about easier to work with. I’ve fallen in love with the process and would like to make the switch from Network to Software Engineer, but the current company I work for outsources all of the Software projects so I don’t have anyone to go to for advice on this topic. I’m a former collegiate athlete and I feel the best move would be to find someone who could kind of mentor me. I also live in the Dallas area which seems to be a dead zone for all things exciting. Has anyone that has experienced this type of situation offer me any advice on steps I could take to better my chances of moving into Software Engineering? Any advice is appreciate, Thanks in advance!
U already r a programmer. All u need is ur first swe to make it official.
I am very eager to learn I feel like a good mentor would do me good. Since I played Football in college, I’ve pretty much been coached all my life. Is it normal for Senior Engineer to actually mentor younger ones? Sadly, from my experience at Verizon this isn’t happening.
DM me. I’ve been on similar path and landed a staff SRE position.
LinkedIn SRE would be perfect! Great company and SRE culture as well
Start with Network Automation. There is a huge market for it with lack of potential employees. The market is ready to be tapped. There is a lot of potential of Software development type role in Network Engineering and Cloud Network Engineering. In fact nearly all Network Engineering roles require you to know Python now. Reach out to me if you need more info. I am on the DFW area as well.
You sound hungry and willing to learn. Keep learning, apply all over, be ready to move to different location. Huston is an option.
