Hi, can someone Canadian who came to Amazon on TN Visa and got green card explain to me how it works? Is it even possible or do I have to insist on HB1 visa to be able to latter apply for green card ?

So here’s the thing - TN is a non-immigrant intent visa. So to get a Green Card you’d have to get an H1 or L1 and then file for GC.

Or if you got a couple patents to your name, file GC in EB1 category under ‘extraordinary’ talents.

I485 indicates immigration intent. Stay in the US after you have filed I485 and you are good.

      Check with an immigration lawyer.

If you get a TN, you need to pretend that you have no intent to immigrate until you get an H1B. If you tell the border agent or hint to them that you plan to stay long term (aka, house, fiancé, etc) they can deny you.

    1. Make sure you are not born in India or China.
    2. Make sure you have at least 2 years on your TN.
    3. PERM, I140 and I485 and do not travel outside of the US until you get your GC

So much wrong info on here. How the heck do you think people on B2 tourist visa/status get GCs after marrying a US citizen?! Duh! Of course you can convert from any status to GC.
The only restriction with non-immigrant statuses are these two:
    1. Once you file I-485, you cannot travel and then come back on a non-immigrant status. You have to wait until you get your Advance Parole card before you can travel.
    2. After entering the US on a non-immigrant status, I believe, there’s a 60 or 90 day period when you cannot file I-485.
Other than that, you can stay on TN and travel freely during PERM and I-140. Been there, done that because I was on TN for 12 years and got my GC while on TN.

It is definitely possible and many people (non-India/China/etc) do this every year. Similar to changing from F-1 to green card.
