Front End or SWE at FAANG??

tldr; FEE from AZ with 5 years experience, thinking about moving my family to Seattle for more opportunities. Should I target FE roles for a better chance of coming in at a higher level/TC or does it matter? What is the interview process like? Hey all, I know front-end specific roles are relatively new positions in the larger tech companies, as they've historically hired generalists, but I'm really curious what experience people have interviewing for and working in these roles? I've spoken to a few people in these positions and they've expressed that the interview process is generally more practical for the role you'd be doing. Less algorithm heavy, more implementing interactive components and UI elements? However, I've also been told they are usually looking for more senior people to fill these roles? I live in AZ and have about 5 years of experience in front end (~5 years in design before that) and currently hold a senior role where I regularly mentor other developers, lead teams, make architectural decisions, do code reviews, etc. My boss has made it known to me that she wants me to move into a "Team Lead" position, that would involve more formal managing of others. I'm not really at the point in my career where I want to move to management and still have a lot I want to do and learn as an engineer. Unfortunately, outside of moving to management, there's not a ton of opportunities to advance my career within the state, so I've been heavily considering targeting larger tech companies as my next career move and moving my family to Seattle. I was hoping to move to a SWE role, as I'd like to move to a more full stack position, but if my chances of coming in at a higher level are better on the front end, that seems like a more logical choice. Would my title be "Front End Engineer" at these companies and would I be segregated to working on the front end only, or would I have opportunity to move throughout the stack if I wanted to? Is it different depending on the company? Is it even worth applying as a FEE or should I just go for SWE and hope to come in at a higher L4 TC? Any advice would be awesome!

There, I added a tldr for you 🤣

Frontend interviews always include very tricky Javascript questions. If you're comfortable solving algorithms with Python I'd say go for the SWE.

A couple of hours on Frontend Masters or something of equal quality makes those tricky JS questions not nearly as tricky.

Would there be any benefit to me applying as a FEE as far as level/TC is concerned? I'd prefer to be more on the SWE side anyway, so if it doesn't make much difference, it seems like SWE might be easier to study for?? Otherwise, any suggestions on Frontend Masters courses to look at?
