Front-end to Back-end/ML

Aug 18, 2019 13 Comments

Nowadays, I feel like most of the companies don’t prefer the hire front-end developer. back-end/ML engineers looks more popular.

I have 5 YOE in front end/full-stack should I more focus on back-end?
anybody have made this choose?

How so? Front end is as important as ever

  • Not enough mobile developers I say. Too many people chase the buzz words like ML.

  • It's not that they don't hire for front-end, it's just that the demand is lower. I was in your exact position with less yoe and I realized that in most companies only 1 in 6 engineers specialize in front-end... With those numbers getting hired at top companies is near to impossible, not only do you have to be a perfect fit but get lucky with timing. I suggest reading "designing data-intensive applications" and switching to back-end if you find it interesting.

Front end is just less popular because omg css, pixel pushing is so boring, etc...

I agree about the hiring ratio of fe/be. Also in most of the office in Europe don’t have any front end role open or very limited. They are more looking for BE and ML.
Sometimes I found fullstack ads when I talk with the recruiter it is actually more focused on BE side.

I don’t really enjoy back-end stuff though but I feel like they started to think like any back-end engineer who has a bit interest for FE can do the FE. so this makes me start to think about more focus on ML side.

I will take a look at “designing data-intensive applications”. Thanks for suggestion.

  • No I feel it's other way around. There are so many backend developers that the supply is too high. It's always difficult to find good front end dev with solid CS skills.

  • How are you able to tell? You always need frond end devs to build product. Not every product is ML. Front end dev should always have more demand.

    • You can ask recruiters. Take FB as an example, there are only 1k front-end engineers and 16k engineers total. (These numbers were from 2017)(Front-end engineers didn't include full stack engineers)
