Want to eventually become a high level manager at a FAANG (open to staying at Apple or maybe going elsewhere), and possibly an executive. I know front-end web dev and mobile are different in many ways, but I lumped them together because both have greater exposure to working in a more product facing role. However I have greater interest in ML (currently a data dev). But my ultimate goal, especially as I start a family in the nearish future is to move into management. Would having an ML/data background hinder career growth as a manager who hopes to move up the ladder in the management chain? Or would I have a better chance with experience working in a directly consumer facing application environment? Thanks in advance! Edit: TC: 300k yoe: 7
From what I’ve seen, management opportunities tend to have more to do with being on a growing team than being in the right field. You’ll find management opportunities either way, but the most important thing is to join a company where headcount is growing in the .org you join.
Ah okay, thanks for the insight!

You want to move from IC to manager *especially* because you're starting a family? You don't think you'll have more free time as a manager, do you?
I guess life sucks as a manager at Salesforce.. SWE managers here have it pretty well
No one said anything about it sucking; less WLB is the nature of the job dude, no matter where you are But okay, good luck 🤷♂️
