Potential employer asked me to board a flight (sponsored) for 3 hours and attend on-site interview directly without any accommodation or reimbursement for expenses. Should I insist on reimbursements? Should I go either way? New grad here with 3+ experience.. Employer - start up with 60 employees
Interviewing is like dating and the job is like a marriage. If they're treating you like that now, expect bad things if you go work there.
It's service based..Which makes me think twice...Won't join . . .Bt got zero offers in hand..Kind of desperate . .
This is deeply unethical conduct. You can insist on reimbursement, but the better course would be to find a different employer.
No other offers...Feeling desperate..
This employer is not looking out for you. Don't let desperation make you weak.
Is your flight back on the same day? If they’re flying you back on another day then it’s very unprofessional to not already have a hotel ready for you
Flying me back later in the evening . . . What hurts me is flying in formals for 3 hrs...Sweating out all day...Spending another 4-5 hrs gng back home . . All in FORMALS 😢
Yeah that’s rough. Ask them if they can accommodate you for one night so you can check out the city. If they say no that’s pretty shitty of them...just depends on how desperate you are
Sounds sketchy. I would pass. It’s not only 3 hours , it’s getting to an airport , flying , landing , getting to the office interviewing getting to the airport and back home with no reimbursement. So it’s a minimum of 4 ubers and two - three restaurants I ain’t covering that for a potential employer. They want to be frugal? Interview on skype. They want to do an on site? Than put up the money. For a compny it’s small change. Especially if they work with a recruitment agency. But for me as a candidate? Pass. I don’t need to spend around 200$ for shuffling around in airports and having the “honor” of interviewing. Regardless of that being the only opportunity - this just shows company has very bad decision making on spending money.
I have had multiple startups telling me the same thing. It is not unethical. They are cash constraint. Don’t expect them to treat you the same way as an established company would.
1. If the work with a recruiter - they already pay a lot to the recruiter. 200-400$ for a candidate that makes it on site is not serious 2. If they don’t and they are cash constrained - they should do a virtual interview session.
(Worked at a couple of startups - grew with one of them from 5 people in an apartment to 150 people , 5 international locations and 10s of millions of daily users)
Why don't you ask for accomodations and their reimbursement policy and see what you get back before travelling. You'll have better j formation to work off of. Good luck. I would pass though...
