I turn on ESPN today and the Overwatch World Cup was on rather than american football. Got me thinking about how that will be in the future compared to the likes of basketball, soccer, football, baseball, hockey, MMA, etc. What do you guys think the future is for E-Sports?
esports are simply more accessible than physical sports. More people anticipate, more people watch. It’ll get bigger than physical sports
Good point
I’m extremely curious about market segmentation. For example if I love the game of basketball I’ll watch the NBA. With gaming, new games come out every year, so I just think it would be hard to keep up with all the different games over the years.
I also want to see how quickly universities will begin to profit off of esports like how they do with physical sports.
I am a fan of video games and a fan of sports, mostly NFL and basketball. But I don’t get esports. I tried to get into it in the Starcraft 2 days but I just didn’t understand the excitement over it. Can someone help explain to me plz?
Did you play StarCraft?
The deeper understanding you have for the strategies that are being executed by the players the more excitement you will feel. Like watching grapplers on the ground in UFC. For most people it just looks like two people that are lying on top of each other. But for others there is a constant battle in positioning and planning for the next moves. The difference is that it is easy for a human to guess and comprehend the situation of two people on the ground and to be impressed by certain moves. While it is very hard to be impressed by a StarCraft strategy unless you know the risks, the options, the tiny details that made for this strategy to become viable etc.
Your argument is invalid. ESPN only has Monday Night Football for NFL. Tune in on a Saturday and you’ll see all day NCAA football.
It’s not really an argument. I don’t really care to dispute ESPN’s contract with the NFL. It’s changed significantly in the last 20 years. I’m more curious as to the longevity of people’s growing interest in Esports.
It’s business. NFL contracts cost billions. ESPN also shows bull riding, crossfit, and poker.
There are two major problems with esports. The first one is that unless you play the game, it's not very interesting. I watched the league finals a couple of days ago and not being a league player, it didn't make much sense. Sure, you kind of get an idea that the goal of the game is to destroy the enemy's base, but it's hard to get excited about big plays if you don't play the game enough to understand them (or even notice them) when they happen. Second, the popular game of the day changes. A couple of years ago it was StarCraft, then counter strike, then league and DotA, and there's always been other scenes like Street fighter and other fighting games. There will probably be Fortnite or pubg at some point too, so it gets increasingly hard to get an audience that sticks around.
I wonder why they were broadcasting it on espn though? Esports and sports are not the same thing.
I read that as “Future of escorts” and was mildly disappointed when I read it correctly
You would, John McPee. I saw your documentary on Showtime 😂
I think there's a limit to the reach of esports. If you don't play the game it's often extremely difficult to understand what's going on. However people streaming games in general will still grow like crazy. The top streamers are making several hundred thousand per month
I think it’ll continue to get bigger, but I don’t think that it will get as big or bigger than traditional sports are today. So I voted “other”.
