I’m in programmatic with one of the bigger ad networks. But was recently poached by a recruiter to work for Google as their ad ops manager under the GPSE team and its a 12-mth contract, with possible extension.

I’ve always wanted to work in Google but is the leap worth it for a contract job?

I’m based in Singapore.

Hmm I’m seriously torn between a good stable job and a dream. If it’s contract based though, are they allowed to terminate me anytime?

Googles offer is about 10% higher only. But this is Singapore, we get lowballed like mad here even for top companies.

I would go for it OP! Most of the time Google renews the contract. I believe there is a 2 year max though (after that you have to take a break in order to come back.)

In regards to moving from TVC to FTE, it is rare so don't count on it. However, it's not impossible. The people who actually do it are temps though.

    • Wow there is some bad advice here. Hiring managers need to chime in.

You may NOT be converted. In this environment, you likely will not. Why? Headcount is being tightened at companies like Google. And you have to compete with internal FTE employees looking to transfer.

It’s upsetting to see so many contractors hopeful of conversion. It is dependent on variables over which you have zero control. You can work hard and do your best but you can’t produce headcount where it doesn’t exist nor can you guarantee contractor bias won’t exist when you’re up against FTEs. Never take a contract expecting to convert. A responsible hiring manager will tell you the truth about headcount, but few do because they themselves don’t know as it changes from quarter to quarter.

  • There are benefits and disadvantages together. Contractors are second-class citizens anywhere, but imagine any FAANG, where the thickest, meanest, rudest, most self-entitled heads go to work as full-timers. They will certainly treat you like a bug. Humanity among humans is long gone. You could still be lucky, you may have been a false-negative candidate that deserved to work at FAANG, but never got through the terrible Interview game. You may get to work with the most humane team and supervisor and group. So you never know. The good side, you get to work for Google, and you can use that "tag" to gain any form of traction in your career, unless you really think that sort of traction is necessary.

Yes. Go for it. I've missed so many opportunities because didn't want to work contract. But you have to consider a lot of things like what are you giving up, are you happy at your current job, what's the $$$ difference, etc

Google treat contractors as indentured servants. They vaguely hide it, but it shows through.

FB does the same things. But, they are better at hiding it and it doesn't show until you start asking questions, asking for things you see FTE recieve, asking for fair treatment, and even if you ask for proper attention from subject matter experts.

Fuck FB and Google contracts. They need to put up and give FTE status or shutup.

  • I was in the same position recently.. with decent full time job but offered for contract at Google. Everyone advised me against it and told me to "wake up". I say at the end of the day, go with what you want and ignore the masses. I've listened to the people on here on more than one occasion against my gut and regretted it after. Quitting my last job for my current role at Netflix is one of those regrets.
