She solved it non optimally and then solved it optimally but it took her the whole interview. The interviewer also laughed at her and told her it took too long and if she has programmed before
Is this normal? Idk I'm in HW but it seems bad

The problem is you have a breed of people desperate enough for that tech moolah ๐ฐ that they are will to go to great lengths to prepare. These people memorize solutions to problems AND have problem solving skills AND have solved / memorized 100s.
In my own circle of friends all of whom made it to FAANG I have solved the least @700 LC.
Thereโs one guy in our study group who has done 1400 LC problems.
We have group quizzes and mnemonic devices to recall solutions
I know friends who sent their spouse and newborn kids to home country and prepared 7-8 hours every day outside of work.
No one admits this.
A lot of successful people are doing this.
Not many accept it or talk outside their circle about this
Btw age discrimination happens because companies donโt want people with family / kids aka outside life. So yes it will also filter out youngsters with outside life as well.
I know many many talented engineers who had their careers cut short
Someone could be the worst coder in the world and there's still no excuse for acting like that. Fuck those interviewers.
Please try to support her at this time. I know I am much better than the other folks who did get into MSFT that time.
Ask her to work on things she can fix, feel those emotions but let that not be a measure to undermine herself. I hope she finds a good internship ๐
It really depends on who you get as an interviewer. Some people will ask you to delete a node from a linked list others will go hardcore with their extravagant problems.
The laugh though is not okay. I would actually reach out to her recruiter and say it made her feel even more stressed.
