Facebook software engineer, university grad

Jul 14, 2018 11 Comments

I am looking at Facebook jobs in the NYC office and am not sure which to apply for.

I see some senior dev positions which ask for 6+ years coding experience. I’ve only been working for 4 years, but have been coding for closer to 8-10. Is that ok?

I also see a much broader role “software engineer, university grad” which I’m clearly qualified for and doesn’t seem to require being a “recent” grad by any means, but do they mean to imply “recent”?

Message an NYC Facebook recruiter on linkedin. Don't apply via website.

  • I don't think you have a lot of chances with the University Grad position. Facebook likes to hire returning interns for those positions. For most companies, you usually need to have less than 1 YOE too. Being "only" qualified for a university grad position after 4 years would be a pretty big red flag.

    • That makes sense. I’m mostly just surprised there’s no jobs b/w the recent grad position and the 6+ years experience so I was wondering if they really mean “6 years work experience” or just “6 years coding”.

    • I remember reading recently that they are slowing down hiring of non-senior developers, except for new grads. Maybe that's why?

    • What’s your experience at Microsoft in nyc? Would you recommend it? Google was also on my shortlist but I truthfully didn’t realize Msft had a presence here.

Microsoft and Google both have engineering offices in NYC and they work on various things related to core tech. Don’t know what career stage you are in, but if you are principal for Microsoft or L6+ for Google considering joining the offices in HQ for more impacting work.
