Sad about missing my big payday and joining a smaller company

I had taken a break from work at the start of this year due to mental health and am now looking for a job. Been interviewing at all the big firms and got a big NO cause I underestimated the importance of practising LeetCode (was more of a pen paper solver) . I have 2 offers -- one from Zeta and another with a startUp with offer of around 37.5 lpa CTC [Fixed -> 28 base + 2 bonus + 2.5 LPA joining bonus + 5 stocks] . YOE : 3 .. I really regret fucking up my interviews with rubrik as I quite well prepared but since was a bit slow on Data Structures, the company asked me to fuck off . I really feel I missed a great chance to earn a big pay day in a company like rubrik or Amazon (almost got the offer) and joining a startup would put me behind economically for years ...
The startUp is asking me to join this Monday but I feel if i take a month more for practising LeetCode , that would be enough and i can again apply to bigger companies like Cohesity or Microsoft or Confluent and work calmly without worrying about my relatively lower salary for the next 3-4 years (con being I will miss out on the startup job) ... But, if i join this startUp , for the next 3 years, my pay is good but not fucking great for me to be committed to this company and I know i will feel maybe even jealous of other people earning better money ... Am i being greedy here or does everyone want to go to a company which pays fucking great ? What's the framework for anyone making a decision about the company they wanna join ? #tech #amazon #startup #salaries

At 3 YOE, work at smaller startups. TC can be lesser, but as you head to 8+ YOE, your profile will stand out and the TCs then would too.

I hear a lot of people say this but people having a great payday at good companies won't even move out of their companies for years and will be learning a lot too ... isn't that learning good learning?

It would be 'slow' learning with less power of negotiation on what you work on. Years 0-8 have special advantages including lesser responsibility outside of work. You need to consider that TC follows skill, and it is always better to develop skill than worry about a 15 % margin.
That said negotiate hard in the smaller companies - maybe you can make more.

  • Please take into account what do you get to learn/work on in the role. Maybe, the 2+ years you put in at the startup will be much better than addressing Sev2s throughout your tenure at Amazon/Rubric.

Great Pay + Decent/shit job. OR Decent Pay + Great Work & Learning?

It’s sad companies rely heavily on solving complex LeetCode problems instead tapping into a candidate’s potential ability to build high quality, scalable systems. Or assess whether the candidate is a great fit culturally and can work well with colleagues. Or asses if the candidate can take criticism well, open to ideas, etc. IMO, not all cases, being part of the ground up is an exciting opportunity and would allow you to grow and catapult your skills so if you want to join a larger company later on you’ll have better leverage.

Consider creating poll for better clarity of answers.
Coming to your question, I think you should study for few more weeks provided you can manage finances. I had been into job which I don't enjoy and that's toll on mental and physical health.

The product itself is good, but I am not sure about its market. Anyways if you like the product and work, go for it. They are a pretty small team, so scope of work should be good.
