So I'm planning to resign from Amazon and join a new company in June. So in the month of May I'm going to be taking a break.

Some things I realize is that I'll need to pay for healthcare possibly, I may need to pay my last months of work health care (idk how it works exactly), stocks have already vested and sold, that's all I can think of.

Some things I wonder about is my 401k and if I need to do anything special during the gap period. I also wonder if I need to do anything special for healthcare or just elect for Cobra.

Also, kind of unrelated, for people in NYC is there anything special that needs to be done to receive payment for vacation time? I have about 11 days and from my understanding NY law says it should be paid. I'm assuming I don't need to do anything but wait for a deposit.

Wondering if anyone else did this and if there's anything I'm missing.

Current TC : $165K
Newer TC : $210K

Don’t forget to grab any designs that you created for future use. Documents and such, not source code.

401K can be rolled over into an IRA later, but you may have to pay for fees while you are no longer employed at Amazon.

Not sure about the NY law.

  • Quit on the 1st of the month. That way you will have health care for the rest of the month. Check with your next company to see when the health care coverage starts.

COBRA. A letter regarding COBRA will come within two weeks of your leaving Amazon. You can enroll in COBRA immediately, but you really don't need to if the health insurance at your new job is effective on your first day as you can make the election retroactively for up to 60 days. (Also, most companies pay for health insurance through the end of the month you resign, so the difference between leaving on April 30, as opposed to May 1, can be significant. Other companies end coverage on your last day of employment. Check with HR.)

401K. You can leave your 401K with Amazon, roll it to your new plan, or to an IRA. There's absolutely no rush to do this.

MISC. Be sure and download contact information for those you may need for reference, or networking, purposes in the future.

Yup! Based on my last employment you’re covered for the remainder of the month that you leave in. I’m unsure if you need to stay for 1 day or 1 paycheck in May. Would recommend rolling over your 401k when you start at your new company unless it’s significantly worse or something.
