Not asking if you make up the jobs or lie about what you do, but update the title to sound better towards what you’re applying for.
For example: im a client success specialist, but “client success consultant” sounds a lot better.

I’ve never done this but curious if it’s something people commonly do. Thanks all.

  • Absolutely!!! If I was a hiring manager, I'd rather know the title that reflects what you did, not the silly title the company called you.

Oftentimes the company title actually just adds confusion. In summary, a title that is more industry appropriate and adds clarity to what you did is preferred to an esoteric sounding title the company actually gave you.

Resumes are marketing documents, not legal documents.

Thanks, I agree. The defense Industry disagrees though. I put the wrong start date (it was the second of the month not the first) for a job I had 7 years ago and I didn't pass the background check.

I also didn't write associate in front of one of the titles because frankly I didn't know that's what they called me in that role.

I had to go through this whole Appeals process for the background check.

I don’t do it. Eventually, the titles need to match for background checks.

    • I’ve used job titles that were slightly different from reality on all my background checks (e.g. “software engineer” instead of “senior software development engineer”) and no one cared

Companies sometimes have dumbass job titles. I've changed a few on my resume to more accurately reflect the role and experience to recruiters.

  • I was part of a team filled with ICs. We had customer facing roles. Looking at their LinkedIn profile and found out that they were “head” or this and “director” of that. Amazing.

I had a coworker that did this. On his resume that he applied with he listed "Project Manager", and on LinkedIn promoted himself to "Director of IT".

Some companies have weird internal jobs titles. It is okay to list the official title from your company, as well as a corresponding title that is used in the industry (SDE 2, etc). Never overinflate your title though.

I make my LinkedIn title a bit fancy. It helps recruiters find u and identify u for atleast a phone screen. I think after that resume becomes irrelevant
