When do you tell employer you are GTFOing? Uber I see lot of same day notice but thinking if I should be nicer
World is small. Unless you are a low performer and they will not miss you, not burning bridges is a good thing.
World is small but in SF this seems to be normal. Giving notice less than 2 weeks doesn't mean burning bridges either, and in certain way leaving always Burns bridge somehow
My experience was always opposite. As long as it was not a surprise and I was sending the signals in advance on what was and wasn’t working and then made it clear to all that I was chasing a better fit not running from a bad one.
2 weeks normally. 4 weeks if you're senior/lead.
True... except the part about 4 weeks
I still think it's good to offer. You are often responsible for a lot more moving parts. I tend to care about the future of a place, especially if I've exercised some options.
Never burn bridges. Keep to classy.
That's not what I've seen here!
To be fair, the team I worked with that packed up and went to Uber, even five years ago, had an on-the-spot mentality. I think it's more a "you are the company you keep" kind of experience.
Why are you leaving Uber especially during IPO?
If he has his rsus vested why does staying matter?
I usually give an informal one to my boss earlier, than a formal one 2 weeks prior.
Tell us where you’re going next and your new TC or GTFO
I like to do 1 month. Enough time to clean everything up and you can leave on good terms. Even two weeks seems like a really short period, and basically a dick move towards my team.
TL;DR Leave on the best possible terms based on your current scenario. Sometimes that means, GTFO with a few minutes notice, most times, 1-2 weeks notice. This also depends on your level of responsibility in the organization. An IC can leave with less notice than a manager and not burn a bridge. Seldom are there reasons to leave a company. In today’s world, we leave to go into FANG, or for a better TC. Fair enough. You know why? Because in return, a company will fire you, or kill your project. So, the culture is set to create this at will dynamic. This is a critical piece in the decision making here. Now, let’s think about what would happen if you left that day. If you don’t have anything going on, your projects aren’t complex and you’re not going to slam the team hard, cool, why not leave that day? Here’s why, when you joined the company, you were given time to accept the offer, then give a start date, then took time to settle in. So the idea of reciprocating time to understand and onboard was there from the company’s prospective. Second, layoffs are announced. Third, PIPs are obvious warnings. Fourth, you may not feel like it, but people are counting on you; in some way. Those people are who you should be thinking about. They are the more important group to focus on. They will be there for you when you want to join another company, or for advice and help. So understanding that your actions make a lasting impact on your career, you will need to now conclude that a notice *is* necessary, but the question now remains, “How much of one?”. Walk out instantaneously = in fear of safety, in fear of life, raped, harassed, injured by another employee, violated or threatened 1 or same day = you were on a doomed project that was never going anywhere, and no one will bat an eye if you were gone, and you were told that you should look for another job, threatened daily, yelled at daily, verbally abused daily, under extreme stress, under extreme duress, legally in the right, civil rights violated daily, and demeaned or degraded daily. 1 week = you’re an IC, your project is fake or busy work, no one will miss you, you are in a redundant role, your boss just hired someone with your same qualifications without telling you 1-2 weeks = IC or low level manager and you have extra team members who can jump in after you leave. 2 weeks = you’re a manager. You like your team. You’ll need 2 weeks to close things up and transition out. 2 weeks or greater = you’re a manager or above. You love your team. You need a lot of time to wrap things up. Your team can handle the choice you made, professionally.
Tl;dr?
Good advice. Suggest you read it
Wow America is really brutal. In Germany you have at least 1 months notice period. In my current company I even got 3 months notice period
Read question carefully
I see.
