Has anyone here spent some time working in (non-mobile) game development? If so, how was your experience? Big or small studio? How was the culture and how bad was the crunch? Would you ever go back? I expect compensation is generally lower than most other software engineering paths. Iâm just feeling awfully burnt out in my current role (thanks Tesla) and Iâm starting to think about options outside of embedded systems.
Game Dev nowadays is mostly scripting on engines. Mobile is actually one of the only platforms left where many still code the game, but that's going away too.
Thatâs a bit of a shame, but I guess itâs not terribly surprising.
Great fun when youâre young and inexperienced, over time gets annoying when youâre mature enough to understand whatâs going on. Long hours , very ambitious with poor management and under staffed. Heavily under paid so eventually senior talent leaves the industry or starts doing their own thing. Very unstable, even when doing well constant layoffs, reliance on contract roles that should be full time, etc. you really need to be passionate to thrive.
Yes compensation will be 60% at best. Long hours, grinds, expected overtime frequently, very large lack of software engineering understanding, and bad management.
Sounds like a blast. đ What was your role, if you donât mind me asking? What sort of stuff did you work on?
I worked on some ports also have good friends who still work in it making MMOs and ports so still have a good view in it
