Most of the folks I know have been put into pip in the recent times

Afaik they are talented and hard working
Not totally sure what circumstances they are in or their equation with their managers

      2nd hand experience.
Below certain level x amount of people must be terminated from employment. It can be subjective, that is the thing. Performance is subjective. You could be doing great but if not as good as rest, pip

PIP = “Performance Improvement Plan”, when a company is about to fire you for bad performance, but pretends to give you a last chance to improve before. This plan usually consists of unreasonable amounts of work, and success criteria can be open to interpretation. You can work 20 hours a day and complete the entire plan as instructed, but still get the boot. Not many people pass PIP. Most don’t even try, and agree to take the increased severance package & leave.

    • And you’re put there for the most stupid reasons.
It’s bot really that you’re underperforming, they just need to fire someone.
They might list your reasons like “low number of lines merged”, “took one day to merge a PR”, “didn’t do to many code reviews” etc

Amazon is such a big company you can’t apply general statements to all of it. Our org in Alexa devices is solid and managers are not piping anyone, we really need more devs so we can grow scope.

Leadership has told directors/SVP that we will not take in more tasks until we secure headcount to execute without straining the team and risking burnout.

Leadership is also very involved and will do anything to help engineers succeed and grow - we have a lot of really smart tenured folks on the team willing to mentor anyone that needs help.

I’m an SDE and I strongly advocate for my team, but I wouldn’t leave my org because of the uncertainty of other managers at Amazon. DM me if you want an interview.

Amazon is fine if you use it as a stepping stone into faang. but be careful. i worked with a lot of amazonians who were so burnt out that they didn't have the energy to leet code/interview.
