Mainly for the managers who have access to this info: does the gender pay gap exist in the tech industry?
the only gap my between my reports is based on performance and tenure
Could you elaborate on "tenure"? E.g. would you value more 6 years non-Google experience + 4 years at Google, or 10 years Google only? (Or does tenure refer to overall industry experience, in which case the two should be equivalent?)
tenure pre Google determines leveling, and where you start in the mrp band for whatever level you were hired at. in your example, I'm not entirely sure what the diff would be, but I'd guess that more time at Google is better, presuming that time came with strong perf ratings. that said, strong perf ratings over time always trumps everything else, regardless of prior experience.
Wow. There is definitely a pay gap! Anyone who thinks otherwise just has to open their eyes!
What is mrp band?
Yes. My organization recently went over the salaries by gender and found that the women were generally paid lower than the men for the same positions and experience. The salaries for those women were increased to be on par with the men. I don't know why the salaries were lower than men--could be sexism, could be that the women didn't negotiate as hard. But the company is aware and is doing something about it
That's awesome. Props to eBay.
I can confirm, I got an unusually high raise and found out that it brought me in line with my male peers.
There is a gap. Definitely. If you look at specific roles/levels only then you miss the gap. If you look at "performance" buckets. Then you miss the gap too. The issue is that the gap manifests primarily as subconsciou bias which impacts perception of performance, impacts promotions etc...
It's sad. Women need to work harder to prove their talents and they don't get recognized as much as their male peers when it comes to perf bonuses/promos and they get paid less.
It is sad. It is however addressable and I hope that the most of the industry moves to address it.
What if you play the clueless sexist card? Then what do you get?
No gap at all. A real gap cant exist in a free market. The men would all get fired and then go work for the "womens wage". Which means equality once again. You cant maintain a true gap.
Yep. Very true. Many companies know it and hide it because is costly to repair.
One off examples of literally anything exists. It doesn't prove systemic bias. Thats why we have studies, and most studies say no gap for equal work and skills. At most 1-2% explained by negotiation skill.
Every time I have started to manage a new team, there is always a pay gap. Forget about generalized studies, I don't give a f. I speak by the reality I've got to see in my own experience while managing multiple teams and people. Women with equally or even higher levels of experience, education, performance and skills were being paid less just because. They tried many times with other supervisors to get the issue fixed but none of them were willing to fight the fight. Always silly excuses. And when I requested a raise for them, common answers were: sorry, we just don't have the money to do it right now, or wait until the next review cycle and we'll try to fix it there or we know, it's all over the place and we are trying to fix it. So tell me, from your very own management experience, you have truly never had any women reporting making less than man, with no justifiable reason? Oh, and just because I know where your arguments are going to come from, I'm a dude. Just one that doesn't leave in a hole of paranoia and self-negation to justify my own weaknesses.
This is a very tricky subject. Sometimes it is true but in general pay is based on merit and work performed.
But it has been proven time and again that the assessment of merit and work performed is also biased against gender/races
I can only say what I have seen. Just one dimension: gender is complicated enough in this regard ๐. With race it is shitty at a different level. Sometimes I feel this sort of discussions actually hurt real high performing women. I have seen both ways, so really do not have a strong opinion. The only thing I strongly feel is pay should be based on merit/work rather than stupid gender.
