Guilty of charge, I also followed the trend that you should go to FAANG for a successful career and prestigious title. 2020 proved it wrong... Look how awesome smaller companies are doing.. I have worked in two of FAANG and can say the work is not nearly as interesting as some other companies around, and the TC is not that impressive anymore either..

Snowflake, pinterest, snap, and more companies that I am not aware of them are doing great.. work is fun and TC's growth have been good too.

So lesson learned, next time (in 1 year), I won't even bother interviewing with FAANG, will do some research and try to find a medium sized company with better mission and more challenging problems.

And to be fair, I enjoyed all the perks at FB, and although WLB isn't great, but people are fun to with with!

If you are in the Bay Area or Seattle, totally agree. There are better options out there outside FAANG. A friend of mine got an offer from Roku recently, and it was 480k including base and bonus. I was surprised! So, ya, plenty of companies these days pay FAANG like TC with better WLB and interesting works.

How do you find out about smaller companies before they blow up? Snap Pinterest and snowflake are all kind of big names now

Look at LinkedIn top startups list, breakout list companies, companies with funding from top VCs. Obviously it's not perfect, but I guess any upsides also come with risks.

  • What if you end up in a company like quora which was blessed at blind for years? Imagine being stuck there and never go IPO?

Medium sized companies are awesome though but you need to get on the good side of management asap as everything is biased and no proper promo process and such.
