I've been at a ~120 person sized startup for a year now as a software engineer. Yoe: 3.5 years. We're doubling in size every 1.5 years While I get good work and see a path for promo this year, I don't think I get paid as well (160k + 30k worth of options at current valuation). I have setup onsites with 'good' companies in the valley (Google, Pinterest, LinkedIn etc). Other than LinkedIn, I'm being matched to software engineer (non senior roles). I haven't gone onsite so don't have offers in hand right now. I was wondering if I should : 1) stick around and get promoted and then switch in the case that my offers are all software engineer roles 2) go to big name company which will come with a pay raise and best practices, scale and legitimacy etc 3) only prioritize roles where I'm being offered senior position What do you guys think?
Prioritize learning first. And if you believe you’ll learn in one company rather than the other, go for it.
Titles, TC, benefits come second.
Having not worked in a Google/LI etc, does anybody here know how the pace of learning compares to a growing startup?
Stick around. If work is good, company is growing, you can learn fast and get promoted fast at the startup... then after a few years go to FANG at a higher(director) level and chill.
Hate to burst your bubble but unless you are well known speaker and leader in specific area no one will hire you to Director at FAANG.
Do 3 if you want to leave and learn. Take the swe interviews for practice and nail the LI one. You salary will go up dramatically
Can you put ballpark figures on LI compensation for entry-level senior software engg? Trying to understand how much I lose by not being there.
Probably 250-300
Be ruthless when it comes to chasing tc. Titles, responsibilities don't mean much if the pay is bad.
Get promoted and get hired by google in few years as a senior or manager.
Google will downlevel the shit out of you unless you come from another tier 1
LC hard every 2-3 years. Do lots of interviews; get as many competing offers as possible. Jump ship. Maximize compensation. Retire early. Do whatever the hell you want.
