Anyone have advice on how to formulate a demo reel when you don’t have much of a variety of personal footage to work with? A vast majority of what I do is video game footage. I’ve worked on more traditional videos with other groups, but I don’t own the rights to that footage, so I’m hesitant to use it for a demo reel.

I’m pretty much of the belief that you can use any video you were involved with for self-promotion (especially if it’s a private job search). If the companies get upset about you using it...well, you’re already looking elsewhere anyway

  • Did you work on the video? Then you’re fine. Just set the link as unlisted.

Typically you won't get in trouble showing work you've done. I hire many editors and artists and as long as the work is posted elsewhere (youtube, vimeo) in-public the owners won't get upset. You are simply trying to make a living right? Just make sure you don't claim parts of the work you were not responsible for. We've all been burned by young artists and editors who claim to "do it all" but in reality they were heavily produced, guided, etc. Be gracious, be honest. You'll go farther than anyone else.
