I spent my 20s working on passion projects. I founded some startups, studied some science, volunteered at labs, even wrote a book. Now I'm 30 and I need to get a corporate job, and my CV looks... Odd at best. That said, I have a ton of desirable skills - software engineering, data science, project management, sales - I've had to do it all. I also have deep domain experience in finance, economics, neuroscience and (less deep) in synthetic biology. Ideally, I'm looking for a job as a PM, or an IC in strategy/business development. My problem is - I have NO IDEA how the corporate hiring process works. Is there a chance that I will make it through the resume screens as-is? Or do I 100% need to get recommended internally? Will working with a recruiter help? The only big company where I have friends who'll vouch for me is Google, but I'm saving that card until I understand the process better. Any advice/resources/ideas appreciated. Thank you! #faang
I bet you have a lot of great stories to put on your resume! Make sure when you apply that the stories that most closely fit for the role you are going after are on your resume. Try to tailor that resume best you can for the skills that they are looking for. Good luck!
Thank you. If I apply to two roles in one company with slightly differently tailored resumes - will that count against me in any way?
I can’t speak to any individual company, but I don’t think so. It sounds like you can go in a lot of different directions, but each job you apply for may not be seen by the same recruiter or hiring manager.
There are some startups who read "Range" by David Epstein and talk about how they love to hire people with diverse experiences, not sure if that's all talk though
Amazon will take you.
Unironically, yes
Thanks!
