Getting Obliterated on Applications

Hey Blind,

I’m getting absolutely obliterated and rejections from every single job application without even making it to an interview. I’ve tried tips from ZipJob (free tips for resume structure), and Resume Worded to take my resume from a 50% on screening to 86%, but the rejections just keep coming. I’ve done skill assessments on LinkedIn to show I know my skills (even did python and SQL assessments which isn’t always a guarantee in a finance hire).

Does anyone have any tips or resources I can leverage to get some progress in the right direction? At this point I honestly just think getting in front of someone is my biggest challenge. As a last ditch effort I’ve even reached out to recruiters at these companies but they typically just ghost you. #corpfinance #finance #fpa

Looking to move from a startup executive role to a company like Google, Dropbox, Box, Meta, Twilio, Gitlab, Salesforce, etc basically tech company but in corp finance as strategy or FP&A.

  • I’m having the same experience and have also went about it in a very similar fashion with both the linked SQL/Py tests and resume screening. I’ve landed a few interviews but those were the jobs I was least qualified for I.e BVS at salesforce where they take IB/MBB . Coming from being a financial accountant I could imagine your skill set matches a little better to the types of of jobs you are applying for.

What has helped more recently: NeTwOrKiNg , although it’s cliche it’s true . I have sometimes messaged recruiters at companies 2-3 times and I’ve found my chances of getting a response go up tremendously. Just think about that recruiter who has been annoying you with some job you don’t want but I guarantee a name pops up in your head and it’s the person who has messaged you multiple times.

I have stopped going down the path of corp fin and have pivoted to get my masters in comp sci but I wish you the best of luck.

Wow getting a masters in comp sci that’s huge - did you have a SWE undergrad? I was thinking of pivoting as I’ve done some coding on the side mainly through python (Home Assistant open source project), but am concerned about a potential drop in pay. If you did undergrad in finance and going for a masters in comp sci I’d love to learn more about that shift for you!

    • I actually came from a undergrad in accounting and finance and started Python programming to help with automating tasks for my side business. Feel free to DM and we can discuss both of our backgrounds !

Technical skills aren’t going to mean anything, unless maybe you’ve done something valuable with them beyond just taking a class or “skill test”. Networking is your only hope (not literally but pretend it is).
