Getting back to work

We had a family member require hospitalization for two years, and then they required 24 hour supervision at home or at school. I had to leave my career and skip returning to college to provide for the minor. He is not my child. His mother and I are not married. He is now 18. He has since fallen off the wagon, and is doing so many questionable things. I can't possibly start a career while living at home. It's something new every day. I fell like if there were a company looking for a telecom engineer (microwave/t1/e1/fiber/ and land mobile) I would be a shoe in. But I can't seem to connect with the right people to get my career back on track. I feel like i'm running out of options and wasting my life. I'm 31, and at 22 I had a great job, great perks and 70k a year salary. Email, hitting the phone book/bricks and in person networking have come up dry. I really really want to work. How do I find my place after so long? Thanks in advance.

I am sorry about your situation. Have you tried extensive networking on LinkedIn? As a telecom engineer it might be difficult to find truckloads of opportunities. Have you considered moving into software or data science etc? That might make this transition easier.

Seconded for LinkedIn. That's where I've found all my jobs.

"Thirded"....make sure to turn on the feature that you are looking and are okay to be contacted.....this is super important..... You can also use the linkedin radar to find specific people by role in companies you are interested in. This is the back side of LinkedIn that recruiters use to find people. You can use this yourself....pm me if you need help.

Oh man. Telecom is hard sector to get job compared to IT. My wife was in Telecom and faced a lot of difficulty switching jobs. Once she ended up in an IT role at her company she had skills usable for many more organization. Career switch is a thing too. May not be for you but worth evaluating.

Learn Business Intelligence. Easiest way to get into tech and there are a ton of opportunities and they pay very well. For this you'll need to learn SQL, databases, data warehousing, and a dashboarding tool like PowerBI. Opportunities are all over the place. Within 2 years you can make 80k if you jump on the right opportunities, with perhaps a consulting or contracting company. I have 3.5 yrs experience in the Midwest and I'm around 105k

Db/sql is pretty intuitive. I am familiar with the stuff you're talking about, save PowerBI. Maybe it's time to throw away 15 years of experience. Sigh. Also, thank you.

With 5g needs to have RAN at every pole and intersection, I am sure you would have lot of opportunities coming your way. If you are in one of the cities where carriers are deploying 5G, you may find something. Moat of such jobs are unionized, so if you have union related connections, it may help

There have been good reviews of them - https://lambdaschool.com/. They train and place you but take a cut later off your salary once you get placed with job > 50K to recover tuition. Nothing upfront. Since you seem to have tech background and know about sql etc, you may find it easy and will update your skills to broaden possibilities for you.
