Getting into Quant Trading

How does one exactly get into quant trading? Especially coming from an SWE background -- what would one need to learn, read, do to get into a quant trading role career-wise? I've been interested in a while and thinking about making the switch if possible while I'm still young

Easiest way is get in from school. You almost kind of get shut out of most quant research roles if you didn't start in it from school. Next route in is be good at the SWE skills they need in trading (low latency) and then internally transfer to research after learning the ropes. If quant trading refers to Jane Street or Volant or Optiver where there's a manual element, some shops will take non-students to be junior traders, you pass the puzzle/game/betting interviews and start at the bottom.

Most of the quants I knew had PhDs in mathematics, statistics, physics, etc. Basically some sort of strong numerical field.
