So I graduated from college just under a year ago. I'd been on a pretty good trajectory (w.r.t. college, internship brand names). When it came time to choosing full time positions, I got pressured into taking some bad career advice and ended up as a software engineer at Citi. I'm pretty confident in my abilities to get back to FANG and do well professionally, but I feel like this will remain a blemish on my career path. Anyone got tips to get over this (clearly irrational) obsession?
There is no such thing as prestige
There absolutely is. Anyone that thinks otherwise is delusional. We all know there is a perception hierarchy
No there Isn’t. Only specific stereotypes on here believe that crap.
Interview at all the big name companies and see if you can snag an offer. That's your tip right there. Put yourself out there and explore the job market and see where that leads you! All the best!
Man..who gives a shit about prestige..prestige is a man made up concept..just care about if you are doing something you enjoy, if you’re good at it and if you’re getting paid well for it..al the rest doesn’t matter
Not at all. Started out of college at a small startup that did not do well. Was able to join Tesla. Left Tesla and got offer from Facebook.
Left Tesla for FB? So you fucked up!😉
What looks really nice on resumes is a list of useful contributions. Doesn't matter if it's at Citibank or whatever
Keep learning new skills. If you have top notch skills in field that is high demand, one of the FANGs will want you to replace someone who isn’t bringing as much value as you can
All he needs is to leetcode and study system design.
Honestly, spending time learning new languages and frameworks is probably more valuable than leet code
Citi needs smart people like you. It has plenty of interesting problems to solve. At the end of the day, solving problems make people happy. If you can solve a problem, no matter how trivial it is, it is tremendously rewarding to your mind. Whether it pays $ or not is a different story.
When you look at resumes, you'll see most have several companies of all kinds. Company name means jack shit. Additionally, after you get your first job, your school name means jack shit too. All that matters is your skills/experience and how good your are at leetcode, lol. You'll get your interviews. Just make sure to prep and be in championship form so you don't get penalized with a 12 month re-interview time period

Why would this be a blemish on your career?? Just join a FAANG for your next gig
I think it would be just because it looks like regression. I was at a T10/T15 CS school w/ a FANG internship and now I'm here at a non-tech F500 company as a standard software engineer.
It's all in your head. Just join fang for next job and you're set
