Here’s the deal: I don’t like my job anymore, so I could just quit once I have another compelling offer, and call it a day. However, I’ve been at my current company for a long time and have been a very high performer, and I wonder if I could go to my boss and say (in nice words): “dude, I don’t like this job anymore and my productivity is declining. So, if you lay me off with a 4 month severance I’ll quit today. Otherwise, I’ll continue working but my productivity will decline so I will likely end up PIP and will take many months (and money) to get rid of me, since here we give a 6 month PIP for under performers”. Am I crazy? Never heard of this strategy before. Just a way to milk a bit more money from the employer before quitting, without burning bridges completely. Edit: how about this? https://www.financialsamurai.com/how-to-engineer-your-layoff-make-a-small-fortune-by-saying-goodbye/
Having been a manager in the past, that kind of a conversation is a good way to get shown the door with zero severance.
On what ground though? I could sue the company if they just fire me on the spot without documentation.
You're literally telling your manager you're not performing and you're trying to extort the employer for money.
I want to do the same exact thing but u sort of just have to do the expected thing and just chill and basically get paid while you look for another job
Penny wise(?). Pound foolish.
You’re better off just taking another offer and leaving with a standard 2 weeks notice. Burning bridges after being a high performer is not a good idea.

Go for it. Looks legit
I don't have to read that damn thing, just Leetcode and interview. Trying to land a good job and engineer your lay off at the same time will kill your future
Lol, in at will states you can be fired for any reason or no reason at all. As a manager, if one of my guy says that to me, I would hit up HR and legal to terminate the person ASAP.
Then why the vast majority of layoffs include significant severance rather than just termination for no reason? It’s not that the company is doing it out of kindness, they make the person sign that they will not sue the company ever in exchange for the severance.
I don't know how many layoff you been in. Typically layoff will give 1 week severance per every year employee worked in the company. Company typically do this because they want to employee who didn't get layoffed to still retain some morale. The mutual release is a normal part of layoff process.
Do it 🍿
The strategy is called extortion and it is a crime. Expect to get fired on the spot, at a minimum.
