Looking at TCs in Blind posts makes me feel so low... I know that those are FANG TCs and for people living on west coast where they pay 3k rent for one bedroom but still ... I’m a SDE3 and my TC is 95k. I live in Rochester NY where I pay 800$ for 2 bedroom 2 bath but all in all I feel I am saving nothing compared to guys working FANGs on west coast. P.S It’s difficult to make a move as my wife also works in the same company and visa /GC issues

Come join the rat race with us, it's really fun with the non-stop promo obsession!
Most of the TC posts here are BS.
I feel so too, Sr.devs earning 300 and 400k is really hard to believe
Just look at how FB is printing money out of thin air and you'll see why 400k TC is not so farfetched. FB was the company that triggered this TC war among all the tech companies.
TC is a very vague and misrepresented term. Especially when you account stocks. Noone can predict the stock market. Base salary is the only constant. Rest of the compensation is varied based on market, company performance , your performance etc Next time when someone says his TC is $400k ask him his base salary lol and see the number go 60% down lol
Idk about you, but I take my stock to the bank. TC has always meant total, liquid, take home compensation in one year. Unvested or untradable stock doesn't count. 400k is not uncommon.
Ummmm, if your TC is 95k where a 2B/2B is $800/mo then you are doing equally as well as TC in Seattle, probably better. So live within your means and save money. Put more into retirement to lower taxable income for your dual earner income household.
Old post, but as someone from the Rochester area who moved to CA and ended up working for Apple, I would totally encourage you to take that risk if you’re family is able to. Lots of opportunity in the Bay Area to puddle jump your way around to bigger TC. And good god the weather is so much better. Also, a lot of FANGs are hiring in NYC which might be a better option for you. I know Apple is growing SWE teams there. Good luck!
You have a bigger thing to worry than TC. That is getting laid off in Rochester. Job market is messed up there. Especially given you are in H1B. I would move just for that risk factor. Get out while you can and then worry about TC.

You both can start looking. I don’t think visa and GC is an issue . If you already have I-140 approved and a priority date then it should be no problem to do so. Worst case one of you have to move earlier than the other. Like you said with Fang TC one of you can afford to quit while you guys move and then start looking for jobs and get it within 2-3 months. I think the only thing limiting you is yourself not willing to get out of your comfort zone. Good luck !
Agreed and thanks for response,it’s mostly getting out of comfort zone. My wife’s H1b is being renewed and my GC is getting filed. We do make comfortable living as she earns about the same but both of us earning FANG salaries could make a hell lot of difference in our lives. We are targeting a move once our I-140s are approved ...
