Ghosting by HR after receiving offer letter.

Oct 15, 2019 34 Comments

Hi guys,

I am getting ghosted by my recruiter from amzn, they sent me an offer letter, I accepted, they started background check around 2 weeks back, I am calling the recruiter repeatedly to check on status of background check and confirm my joining date. I am not getting any response for my calls, emails, texts. I have confirmed that the recruiter is not on vacation and still working with amzn. Has anyone suffered similarly from such companies like amzn, msft, Google etc? Location is India.

  • Recruiters = no new news means no contact.

They usually don’t like hand holding.

So I should wait indefinitely till they confirm my joining date or confirm my background verification?

    • Check your credit report to see if they have done it. You’ll see a credit inquiry.

Either way, you have to wait. I wish most companies had a status system

DON’T give notice at your current company until you get confirmation from Amazon and have a start date.

    • Personally, don't give notice until you sign the employment contract. I got burned by this once....

Also stop panicking, relax, and just wait a little, they will let you know if they are withdrawing your offer, they won't just ghost you at this stage.

Don't act like a maniac, calling the recruiter / stalking them on linkedin etc.

It just doesn't work like this in India. Employment contract gets signed on first day of job and the notice period is typically 1-2 months. So you need to resign to meet your joining date. People usually resign when they get and accept offer letter. I know it's risky but this is the norm in India.

Guys, thanks for support, I contacted my hiring manager and he is excited to have me in his team, I didn't complain about the HR but i fail to understand why the HR is ghosting my calls, texts and emails. It's very weird.

  • What role?
Which recruiter are you trying to contact? Sourcer or Client Lead?
What info do you need to know?

Usually the client lead should let you know that your BGC has cleared and you're good to go from the recruiting end. Once you clear BGC then relocation packages are initiated and you move to a "prepare for hire" state so the New Hire Team will reach out a week before your start date and let you know when and where to be.

In theory a week before your start date you should have already received relocation from our external partner and should be good to go.

Keep in mind recruiters dont have anything to do with the onboarding process at Amazon. Its primarily handled by a team in India called the "EOB."

Many background checks take few weeks. You have mentioned it has only been close to 2 weeks since BG started, so give it another week or so.

In parallel, if you have friends at Amazon, ask them to find reporting manager info for the HR personnel, in case you are still ghosted by the HR contact and need to reach out to them after a week or so.
