Anyone at GitHub that could refer me for a Product Designer role that just went up? Me: 10+ years UI/UX/Product. You: At GitHub. Owed a beer by me!
Why would you refer someone if you don't know him/her? Isn't it a fraud?
What? Clearly we met and know him/her from Blind. Sure I know aDesigner. pffft some people worry about the minutia.
Fraud? What, no. Depends entirely on the nature of the referral (in this case, I'd just happy to just get an intro to a hiring manager). Also expecting to have a decent chat (and show resume, portfolio, past referrals etc) with whoever gets in touch before they intro. Not asking anyone to lie about anything.
GitHub doesn't pay referral bonuses to its employees and I've never seen much of a benefit of a referral versus a straight up application. At least in eng the interview process is exactly the same for a referral vs an applicant.
But getting in front of the hiring manager and tech team to actually get the chance to prove you got the skillz is half the battle. A referral significantly helps with that I think because a lot of what they are checking for before the final whiteboard is personality and passion. If you got a person vouching for that it makes it a lot easier for them to pass you along.
Referral don’t get a better advantage at GitHub. Also, we do not allow “white board interviews.” Everything is a take home exercise and a paired programming interview as a follow-up. It’s closer to how we work daily & white board exercises are the worst!
Here's an idea, build a github page, something that you believe could be better. Put your best foot forward, culminate all your skills and perspectives in it and I will put it in front of someone who will be happy to have a look and judge. How does that sound?
I agree with original poster. This isn't a malicious intent and the recruiter is the ultimate gate keeper. That's what phone screens are for. Good acts raise your karma. Sorry mate, would refer you if I worked there
Githib does not have many jobs. You are better off looking somewhere else. That whole thing (Github, StackOverFlow) has kinda sailed at this point. Not much growth there.
Sorry but this is just plain wrong. There are 40+ openings right now on the career page and they are being actively recruited. Keep in mind it's a 700 person company and many of the listings correspond to multiple openings. Getting enough engineers lined up to do all the interviews is the biggest challenge these days.
Is doing stuff for alcohol considered accepting a bribe? Cuz I'd do it.
