Give your number expectations first?

This is a common question but would like to see poll responses here.

For a company with many datapoints on levels-fyi and Blind, should you try to get the recruiter to give their offer numbers first, or should you give your expectations first?

I am thinking about giving my expectation first, based on the 95th percentile on levels-fyi. This way we start negotiations from a highball, rather than starting negotiations from lowball.

For a strong negotiator, it doesn’t matter.

For someone with less confidence, probably best to let them lead.

I always buffer what I want and give my numbers on day 1. Recruiters are not idiots to not know that you don’t want to leave money on the table and you will do everything to avoid answering the question. They know you tell the BS about “paid fair market salary”, “am not here for money”, blah blah blah.

Waste of my time if they can’t afford me.

Depends on how good you are in negotiating. In my current gig I got more than double of what they initially offered, and the initial offer was almost double of what I was making beforehand. Never reveal your cards, I say, you just might sweep the floor while interviewing and get upleveled :)
