I am working in the US on H1B visa. I am new to investment. I have $200k in cash to invest and would appreciate your suggestions. Out of $200k, I will not need $125k in the near future and I might need the other $75k after around 6 months.

I am not sure whether to invest in the US or in my home country India.
- If in the US, then I am not sure where to invest?
- If in India, then I am not sure how to invest so that I get max return considering the India-US taxes and USD-INR exchange rate.

I am not sure how much to invest in which stocks / mutual funds / bonds / crypto, etc.?

I am researching about it by myself and gathering info about different investment options and also learning different terms used in the investment world. But it will also be better if I also get some useful suggestions from here also, which I think is also a part of the research.

I would appreciate if someone have done it well and would like to share some suggestions.

I am 29 and single if that matters while taking investment decisions.

Thank you.

If you need 75k in 6 months, put that in cash (savings acccount) or bonds (BNDW). If you won't need the 125k for atleast 5 years, can put that in VT (total world stock)

      Thank you.

Regarding putting $75k in savings account and/or bonds, CD makes sense as I might need it after around 6 months.

Regarding the other $125k which I don't need in the near future, can you please explain why VT is a good option because I just checked VT and its return seems less than other items like TQQQ or ARKK etc.?

  • Put the moneys in a robo advisor like Wealthfront. Such service will spread it over different index funds based on your risk tolerance determined by a short questionnaire. Additionally when you add money to it, WF will make sure your portfolio remains balanced. DM me if you want a referral code or need hand holding, happy to help.

If it can be executed this way it will be fine but there is usually still a cost associated for the robo advisor service. All I'm saying is that it is not necessary and not always optimal.

    • The cost is justified up to a certain level, after that it indeed can outweigh the benefits

Invest in a US brokerage like fidelity, robinhood or schwab. It's pretty low cost, full assortment of asset classes and will ease your taxes later.

  • Lol. What’s your backlog like? Might as well be faster to grow your investment to 1M and get a green card through investment. https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/permanent-workers/eb-5-immigrant-investor-program

      Thanks.

Actually, just started my green card process so there is no progress there.

Regarding green card through investment by investing $1M, I first need to reach $1M of net worth.
So my question here was how to invest my money right now to maximize the return?
